Malta is set to take center stage in the world of combat sports this summer, as two of the nation’s most accomplished arm-wrestlers prepare to challenge elite opponents from abroad in a high-octane event blending sport and spectacle.
On Saturday, July 19, the Greek Amphitheatre at Ta’ Qali National Park will erupt with energy as Rage Kombat: Inferno ignites the night with a dynamic line-up of martial arts battles and live music. The highlight of the evening? Two headline arm-wrestling clashes featuring local stars Kersten Mercieca and Antoine Zammit.
In one of the most anticipated rematches in the sport, Mercieca will face off against Bulgarian powerhouse Bozhidar Simeonov—a decorated veteran with multiple European and World titles under his belt. The two last met three years ago in a match that left Mercieca injured and eager for redemption.
“Three years ago, I faced Bozhidar, and I tore my bicep,” said Kersten.
“I thought I was ready, but I failed. Now I am more experienced than before, and I am willing to give a great rematch.”
Bozhidar, known for his dominance on the international stage, acknowledged Mercieca’s growth—but warned against expecting mercy.
“I have been storming the arm-wrestling world for over a decade. I’m not the guy who gives second chances, but Kersten is the type of warrior who never gives up and has shown great progress since we collided three years ago,” said Bozhidar.
“Second chance does not mean I will go easy on him – so Malta, be prepared! I am coming to shake your ground once again.”
The showdown will determine the new holder of the Rage Kombat Arm-Wrestling World Title, adding further stakes to an already electric contest.

Another marquee bout sees Antoine Zammit taking on Toms Rozītis, Latvia’s reigning European Champion. The clash will decide the vacant Rage Kombat European Title, and both athletes are approaching the contest with fire in their veins.
“Toms is a multi-European champion. He just won another European championship last Sunday,” said Zammit.
‘‘I am training hard for this match to make Malta proud, and I just want to give him a hard fight. I have no doubt, and I’ve got nothing to lose. Let’s do this! I like to challenge myself and push myself to another level. I like to have big challenges with monsters in real life.”
The Latvian champion, however, remains unfazed.
“Antoine called me out. He can train how much he wants, but he won’t beat me. It will be another holiday for me,” the Latvian champion said.
Rage Kombat: Inferno promises to be much more than a sports competition. With a program featuring arm-wrestling, kickboxing, grappling, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and live performances, it’s a full-blown entertainment festival celebrating strength, spirit, and community.
Set against the backdrop of Ta’ Qali’s iconic amphitheatre, the event is expected to draw large crowds from across Malta and beyond. Doors open at 7pm, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as seating is limited and demand is high for what is shaping up to be a historic night.
